The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industries has dismissed claims by the Minority in Parliament that the government has released seven billion cedis to contractors for road construction projects.
According to the Chamber’s CEO, Emmanuel Cherry, contractors have not received any payment from the government, and the allegation is unfounded.
This follows claims by the Minority at a press conference that the government has released the money from treasury bills to pay contractors for road construction projects.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Cherry expressed surprise at the Minority’s claims, stating that the Chamber has not received any information about the alleged payment.
He emphasized that the Chamber’s primary concern is the timely payment of contractors for their work done, as specified in their contract documents.
Mr. Cherry noted that many contractors have abandoned project sites due to the government’s delay in paying them, while others are struggling to continue to work with their limited resources.
He acknowledged that if the government had indeed released GHS 7 billion to contractors, it would have been a positive development.
The Chamber has vowed to investigate the matter and uncover the facts, as the allegation has raised concerns among stakeholders in the construction industry.
“Sincerely, as Ghana Chamber of Construction Industries positions, we have not taken notice or received the said allegation or the news that has been released by the Minority in Parliament, so it is news to us, and so we are also going to delve into it and get the facts out because you and I know that our concern is about payment and for some time now, the government has folded its hands, not being proactive in paying contractors for their work done as it is due per the contract document.”
“So technically, most contractors have moved from sites, but some are at the site, but the pace of work is very slow because they are trying to use the little resources they have, whilst others who don’t have that financial capacity are home together with their workers, so if seven billion is being raised per this assertion, it could have been a plus.”
