Chiefs and opinion leaders of the Okper Division of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Paramountcy are urging the youth and other community members to only give attention to politicians who can bring development and transform the lives of the people while uniting them in the process.
As the country nears the December 7 general elections, the chiefs are admonishing their people not to be swayed by lavish promises from politicians who want to prey on the minds of the people just to win power.
According to them, access to good roads, potable water, and jobs for the teeming unemployed youth will remain key in their choices for this year’s 2024 general elections.
Jonathan Sematey, an opinion leader in Somanya who has lived there all his life, re-echoed the concerns of the youth and other residents.
Nene Teye Ayenorgu, the Divisional Chief of Okper in the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, is also concerned about the state of roads in the municipality.
For drivers, okada, and pragyia riders who ply various routes in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, they have to spend a chunk of their profit on spare parts weekly.
In past years, the Yilo area was in the news for the impasse between them and the Electricity Company of Ghana, but with that issue resolved, another issue threatening peace and security in the Krobo enclave is chieftaincy disputes. According to Nene Agor, the absence of a judicial committee is leading to the emergence of parallel chiefs.
For the chiefs and opinion leaders, it is very critical for the youth to consider the messages of these politicians, scrutinize them, and see the feasibility of the promises before making a decision come December 7.
