The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has intensified its conservation drive at the Bui Power Generation Station to promote reforestation and afforestation of its operational areas.
The conservation drive is part of the BPA’s long-term and strategic plans to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, promote sustainable forest management, and protect the Bui Dam reservoir for sustainable deployment of energy.
In line with this, the BPA through the exemplary leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi, secured 16,003 seedlings of Mahogany, Teak, Gmelina, and Celba to be planted within the Bui enclave to mark the 2024 Green Ghana Day Celebration on Friday June 7, 2024 at the Power Generation Station.
The celebration which was on the theme: “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow”, had in attendance BPA Directors, BPA staff, staff of Bui National Park, security personnel, Assembly Members for Bui and Jama Electoral Areas as well as teachers and pupils of BPA Green Energy Academy.
Speaking on behalf of the CEO of the Bui Power Authority, the Director of Power Operations Department (POD), Ing. Samuel Nimako Boateng, emphasized that the ongoing conservation drive by BPA is a topmost priority of the CEO due to the significance of tree planting and its positive implications on the dam.
“The CEO is much more particular about the conservation drive because in the past we used to have bushfires here during the harmattan which affected power generation but that has become a thing of the past. Also, we ensure that before we undertake any project, we do everything possible to protect the trees because of their importance to the dam. ”
He added that BPA has started tagging 26 economic indigenous and domesticated tree species that have been identified in the enclave for conservation, protection, and easy identification as part of efforts to complement the fight against the destruction of the vegetative cover.
“…In line with our conservation drive, it is worth noting that, the Board of Directors of BPA in 2023 approved a Policy on the Conservation and Protection of a total of twenty-six (26) different economic indigenous and domesticated tree species identified within the Bui enclave”.
On his part, the Director, Occupational Health, Safety, Security and Environment (OHSSE), Chrisentus Kuunifaa, reiterated that the Green Ghana Day Celebration has come to enhance BPA’s already existing conservation protocol of “plant and conserve”.
“We welcome the Green Ghana Day as part of what we have already been doing so we do not have Green Ghana Day separate project from the Forest Resources Enhancement Programme which seeks to reforest the vegetation, especially along the shoreline where we have our reservoir”.
