CAMFED Ghana has expressed its commitment to supporting more young women in accessing education through its decade-long scholarship programme.
This initiative, a ten-year partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, offered comprehensive support to academically gifted young women in rural communities within CAMFED’s operational regions, enabling them to pursue secondary and tertiary education.
Since its inception in 2013, the programme has assisted over 6,000 young women, with 4,032 receiving support for secondary education and 2,140 for tertiary education.
Beneficiaries received full scholarships covering tuition and accommodation fees, stipends, laptops, medical expenses, and other essentials to ensure uninterrupted studies. This support has unlocked the potential of the beneficiaries, enabling them to thrive in various aspects of society.
To celebrate this decade of impact, CAMFED Ghana convened partners from various regions, including representatives from the schools they collaborate with, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders. The gathering aimed to reflect on, share, and learn from the programme’s journey so far.
In an interview with Channel One News, during the Partner Convening at Lancaster Hotel, CAMFED National Director Fairuza Safian reaffirmed their commitment to girls’ education.
She stated, “This is not the end for CAMFED Ghana and our relationship with the Mastercard Foundation. We have other programmes lined up, funded by the Foundation, to support more children in secondary and tertiary education. This ongoing relationship underscores our mandate to ensure young women become economically independent and can give back to their families and communities.”
Several beneficiaries at the event shared how transformative the scholarship programme has been, highlighting its life-changing impact not only on themselves but also on their families and communities.
Victorine Vondee, one of the beneficiaries stated, “This has been an empowering journey for me. Having to sell on the street when I was young, I knew that was not what I wanted and so when I heard about CAMFED, I knew this was my turning point.
“The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship programme at CAMFED Ghana came through for me. And I am excited about the fact that I have not only been supported in school but gained employment through the programme.”
