The Cancer Support Network Foundation (CSNF) last Friday conducted a cancer awareness and screening programme at Odupong Senior High School in the Central Region.
Over 1,500 students received education on various cancer types, risk reduction strategies, and the importance of seeking professional care for better survival outcomes.
Secretary of the CSNF Blaise Ackom addressed female students specifically, urging them to avoid sexual immorality to lower their risk of cervical cancer.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining proper hygiene to prevent infections that could lead to diseases.
Mr Ackom said the symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal, irregular menstruation discharge, unexplained weight loss and pain during sexual intercourse among others.
He stressed that regular screenings could lead to early detection and effective treatment, encouraging students to spread this message within their communities.
Dr Albert Gyato, a medical professional in his remarks explained the significance of breast cancer awareness and urged women to take breast screenings seriously regardless of their age.
He outlined symptoms such as nipple dimpling, breast lumps, abnormal discharge, and redness around the breast, advising that these signs should not be ignored.
Dr Gyato commended CSNF for its initiatives in raising cancer awareness and providing financial support to cancer patients in Ghana.
Organiser of CSNF, Mrs Ramatu Sumani shared her personal experience as a breast cancer survivor, emphasising that survival is possible with early detection.
She called on all Ghanaians to prioritise breast screenings.
Additionally, Ms Raissa Sambou, another executive member and breast cancer survivor, encouraged students to educate their mothers on the knowledge gained from the forum.
She revealed that CSNF’s efforts aim to promote cancer awareness and support in Ghana, highlighting the critical need for early detection and proactive health measures.
The programme, part of activities marking National Cancer Survivors Month, also offered students the opportunity to undergo breast screenings.
