A two-day event focusing on the dissemination of Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) reports and capacity training on statsbank was recently held in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.
The event aimed to break down multidimensional poverty statistics to aid the design, implementation, and monitoring of local policies and programmes intended to alleviate poverty in all its forms.
The event organised by the Ghana Statistical Service saw the participation of all 33 District statisticians in the region, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), some NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders.
The goal was to equip stakeholders with knowledge about the incidence of MPI, intensity of MPI, deprivation in 13 indicators, and how to make a significant contribution to reducing multidimensional poverty in the region.
During the training, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Legon, Professor Robert Darko Osei, indicated that while past poverty indicators heavily relied on income, multidimensional poverty focuses on other dimensional indicators that need to be studied.
He added that a region or an individual may be non-poor in income but poor in education and health, which are major indicators when it comes to MPI.
The Regional Statistician, Mr Bright Worlanyo Neku, also highlighted that poverty, when measured using all the MPI indicators, is not severe in the Eastern region.
He stressed that the aim of the capacity training of stakeholders in the region is to address poverty and bridge the gap between poverty.
