Market women at the Dormaa Ahenkro Tuesday Market in the Bono Region are appealing to the Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly to press on the contractor building the new market to expedite the project’s completion.
These market women are facing numerous challenges, including the recent heavy rains and increased theft due to the lack of walls in the old market, and are therefore calling for the early completion of the Ghana Secondary Cities market project.
“The situation is very bad. Whenever it rains, you have to pack your items and look for somewhere to hide. When the rain stops, then you can come back. Sometimes the rain even damages the goods in the process of packing. There are always robbery cases here due to the condition of the market. The situation is very bad. We are urging authorities to expedite the construction of the market.”
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Dormaa Central Municipality, Drissa Quattara said processes are underway to develop the market with funding from the Ministry of Local Governance through the World Bank.
“What you are seeing here is a project being financed by the Ministry of Local Government through the World Bank. So we call it Ghana’s Secondary City Support Programme. All over the country, we have 35 assemblies that are benefiting from this funding and Dormaa happens to be one in the Dormaa Tuesday Market and it has never been developed, as you can see.”
“So we thought it wise to bring the funding here so that we can develop some portion of the market. That is what we are currently doing. We are building 56 lockable stores, 112 open sheds, a creche and then a sanitation area. We are looking forward to paving all this floor and then bringing street lights.”
