Medical professionals occupying the Koforidua Nurses Bungalows have issued a two week ultimatum to the Eastern Regional Security Council, the Ministry of Health and the management of the Eastern Regional Hospital to address security issues within the nurses’ quarters.

The health professionals during an emergency meeting, threatened to embark on a massive demonstration and proceed with a sit-down strike action, if their security concerns are not addressed immediately by all stakeholders.

Their ultimatum comes after recent attacks on their lives and properties with the latest being a robbery and assault of a staff’s relative who was robbed off GHC 7,000 and assaulted with a machete. The four-armed men broke into her apartment at 2:30 am, while she was asleep.

The Koforidua Nurses Bungalows provide accommodation not only for nurses, anaesthetists, midwives and their families but also for workers at the regional health directorate including tutors at the Koforidua Nursing Training College.

The once peaceful and quiet area located just opposite the Koforidua Stadium now the Youth Resource Center is fast becoming a prime location for criminals who attack day and night with arms.

According to residents of the area, on the eve of the commemoration of 6th March 2024, which was hosted at the Youth Resource Center, armed men invaded the area and made away with 5 car batteries and tapes.

Countless television sets and home appliances have been stolen in the past years, while the occupants were away at work. Foster Tetteh a specialist ENT nurse had all his belongings stolen minutes after he left his house for work.

Though previously the criminals operated while their victims were away from home the narrative is fast changing as the armed men are now attacking, while their victims are fast asleep in their houses, in the night.

Hannah Konadu one of the staff who was attacked raised the alarm, which drew the attention of the area watchdog committee, forcing the criminals to abandon their raid.

The assemblyman for the Two Streams electoral area Citizen Tetteh who sat in the meeting in an interview with Citi News described the situation as a very worrying one.

The group has petitioned the Eastern Regional Security Council, Regional Health Directorate, Management of the Regional Hospital, management of the Koforidua Nursing Training College and the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to within two weeks address short-term security measure, while long term plans be considered for their safety.
