The president of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has called on chiefs and traditional leaders to admonish the youth within their communities to stay away from acts of violence during this campaign season.
Addressing a National House of Chiefs meeting in Kumasi, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II emphasised the critical role chiefs play in maintaining peace and order.
He urged them to discourage hooliganism and unlawful behaviour among the youth, highlighting the importance of allowing free and fair campaigning and voting processes.
“Let us take the opportunity to speak to our youth and our people, especially the hooligans, that everybody in this country has just one vote, and we should all wait till the ballot date before we exercise that vote. Of course, nothing prevents us from campaigning for our MPs and our preferred presidential candidates.
“But we must not take the law into our hands to molest people and to prevent them from either voting or campaigning,” he stated.
He further advised chiefs to be cautious in their interactions with political figures ahead of the general elections.
While chiefs can express their reservations, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II urged them to be mindful of their positions and to handle political engagements with care.
