Residents of Essaman in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and students returning from school after a heavy downpour could not access their home following a downpour on Friday, June 14, that flooded the community.
Some of the students managed to enter the Essaman community via a shaky makeshift bridge.
In an interview with Channel One TV, both stranded students and residents found scooping water from their flooded rooms said Friday’s downpour was incomparable to past flooding.
They expressed their difficulty in accessing their homes or leaving the community to the main street to board a car to Sekondi or Takoradi.
A resident Aba Yaa said, “This has been going on for years, but it seems the NPP government doesn’t want to help us. I have been scooping water from my room since morning and I can’t even do my work. I’m even afraid my children haven’t returned home from school. I have come to stand here to help them cross into the community.”
Another resident, Daniel Nyame-Essaman said, “Our only problem in Essaman is the main bridge from the sea to the Community. Until that bridge is widened, we will forever suffer flooding.”
“Anytime it rains, this place gets flooded. Right now, the whole place is flooded. If I close from work, I have to go through the flood before getting home. So, they should do it for us because people are even considering relocating despite they like it here.”
Henrietta Sampson, an affected resident of Essaman said, “Life here is bad and it makes us suffer a lot. We can’t even do business or have a place to sleep. We have no place to cook, and this affects our eating. Our children can’t go to school because their clothes are wet.”
Another affected resident, Kwabena Annan, said, “The fault is from the Adiembra bridge which opens with force into the Essaman community and floods the community before it enters the sea. When it happens like that, it makes life in the community very difficult.
“All our rooms have been flooded. We don’t even know how we will sleep today. Nobody has come to our aid, but at the end of the day, politicians will come here seeking for our votes.”
They appealed to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly to address the poor drainage in the community.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidates for Sekondi, Lawyer Blay Nyameke Armah expressed his sympathy to the affected victims.
