The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU-Ghana) has made a humble appeal to the government, through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), to create a congenial working environment for members of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA) to practice their profession effectively.
According to the General Secretary of ICU, Brother Morgan Ayawine, the multiplying effect of the hairdressing and beautician profession has been significant in reducing unemployment.
“GHABA continues to contribute immensely to the growth and development of the informal sector by training its operatives and imparting practical skills in the hair and beauty industry to reduce unemployment in the country,” he stated.
Mr. Ayawine further encouraged members of GHABA to be mindful of their civic responsibility and exercise their franchise during the December 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He emphasized the importance of electing capable legislators who can bring development and progress to the country.
“We are in an election year, and as we approach the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections in December, let us all be mindful of our civic responsibility and exercise our franchise,” he urged.
He was speaking at this year’s 7th quadrennial delegates’ conference (QDC) of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA) in Tamale, under the theme “Leveraging modern technologies to drive a positive change in the hair and beauty industry.”
On her part, the National President of GHABA, Tina Offei Yirenkyi, highlighted the numerous challenges facing their members and called on the government to help them set up their businesses.
She pointed out that many members, after completing their training, are unable to establish their own businesses, rendering their training efforts wasted over time.
“Though the government is doing well, we are calling for financial support for our members. An annual quota would go a long way to ensure these women have decent sources of income to cater for their families,” she appealed.
