The Interior Minister, Henry Quartey has expressed the government’s commitment to actively enforce the Narcotic Control Commissions Act as part of measures to tackle the menace of drug abuse.
The act provides for among others the treatment of substance use disorders as a public health issue.
Speaking on behalf of the President at the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking, the Interior Minister, emphasised the need for effective collaboration in addressing what he described as a drug canker.
“The government is unwaveringly committed to the common and shared responsibility of addressing and countering the global drug problem. In demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the good health and safety of the people, Ghana has taken steps in reforming the country’s drug policies by enacting the Narcotic Control Commission Act 2020, Act 1019.”
“The Narcotic Control Commission Act 2020, Act 1019 largely addresses the drug challenges confronting the nation. The act provides among other things for substance use abuse disorder to be treated as a public health issue. Treatment and rehabilitation of people suffering from substance use abuse. Establishment of rehabilitation funds, alternative means of livelihood for people cultivating narcotic plants and cultivation of cannabis with 0.3%.”
