Green Ghana Day:  Safewings CEO advocates for collective action on environmental cleanliness

Dr. Richard Atuahene, the Chief Executive Officer of Safewings Investments Limited, has urged Ghanaians to take environmental cleanliness seriously, emphasizing that our environment reflects who we are as a nation.

He made these remarks during an address to a cross-section of the media ahead of World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on June 5th.

Dr. Atuahene stated, “Every Ghanaian should be deeply concerned about the filth surrounding us and should work together intentionally to change this narrative.” He pointed out the embarrassment caused by some Ghanaians who abuse the environment, thereby destroying the ecosystem that sustains our existence.

He specifically called for a strong stance against illegal mining, highlighting it as a significant threat that devastates large forest areas and contaminates vital water bodies, which serve as essential drinking water sources.

“It is unimaginable how we inflict such harm on ourselves and future generations for selfish gains,” Dr. Atuahene lamented. “The galamsey menace negatively impacts us all, and we must unite across social, religious, and political lines to eliminate it before we suffer further consequences.”

Recounting a visit from his business partner from Monaco, Dr. Atuahene shared how his partner posed embarrassing yet valid questions about the severe pollution of water bodies and the destruction of forests witnessed in rural areas. “This experience made me realize the urgent need for all of us to engage in promoting sustainable environmental practices,” he said.

Safewings Investments Limited, he noted, has been actively involved in tree planting and sustainable environmental practices, in partnership with The Green Republic Project. He encouraged corporate Ghana to participate actively, asserting that both individuals and corporations reflect the state of our environment and that it’s crucial to change this negative image.

Dr. Atuahene urged all Ghanaians to participate in activities on World Environment Day on June 5th and to support Green Ghana Day on June 7th to combat the adverse effects of climate change and global warming.

He revealed that Safewings Investments Limited is developing environmental programs for children to instil responsible environmental values from a young age.

“We cannot fail our children through our irresponsible environmental behaviour,” Dr. Atuahene emphasized. “The least we can do is to educate them about the environment to prevent them from facing even worse conditions than we currently experience.”

He concluded by highlighting that Safewings, through its Corporate Social Responsibility wing, focuses on Education and the Environment.
