The Ministry of Roads and Highways, through the Ghana Highways Authority, is re-evaluating compensation for residents whose structures were demolished to make way for the dualization of the Kasoa-Winneba section of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway.
The Ministry says although some individuals in the right of way received compensation in 2006, an ongoing assessment aims to ensure that those who have not received compensation are fairly paid.
Dr. Abass Awolu, Chief Director of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, announced this during a site visit.
“Largely, people within the right of way at the time were compensated, so the Ghana Highway Authority has the executive instrument, they have a list of all those who were compensated. Invariably, the time has passed, some people might have come into that, that is why they are re-evaluating.
The Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko urged the government to expedite the payment of due compensations to affected residents, to avoid potential legal setbacks that could hinder the progress of the Kasoa-Winneba road dualisation project.
“Many at times these are some of the challenges the contractors on site face, and the project stalls. I’m just using a typical example of Ofankor, you see the number of litigation cases in court, it restricts the contractor. You know this is a major road that everybody is concerned with, we are happy, everybody is happy seeing the road being done. We pray that there will not be any incumbrances, where people will frustrate the process and stall the project and even extend the completion date.
In a related development, the Ministry of Roads and Highways announced measures to alleviate traffic congestion on the Kasoa-Winneba section of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway, which is currently undergoing dualisation.
In response to concerns raised by road users and the minority caucus, the ministry has advertised a bypass to ease commuting on the stretch.
During a site visit by the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, outlined safety measures implemented by the government to ensure the safe passage of commuters.
