The University of Ghana (UG) has marked the African Scientific Renaissance Day with a series of events aimed at highlighting the importance of science and technology in national development.
The celebration, which took place on Friday, June 28, 2024, was held at the Cedi Conference Centre in Accra.
The Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) is celebrated annually on June 30th. The Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU), passed a resolution in 1987 for the celebration of DSRA to remind African governments and people about the critical roles played by Science and Technology in national development.
The event brought together experts and stakeholders to address the challenges posed by illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, and propose solutions to mitigate its detrimental effects on the environment and public health.
The theme for the event was “Galamsey: Preserving the Environment, Protecting Our Future.” The chairperson for the event was Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana.
In the lead-up to the main event, various colleges within the university organised exhibitions to showcase the achievements of UG’s researchers, scientists, and scholars.
Speaking at the event on Friday, the Vice Chancellor of UG indicated that the university had been actively involved in the celebration with unit led initiatives to “make the university more visible as a means of achieving global impact through human centred innovative research. This is also an opportunity to draw attention to the scholarly work innovations and development championed by members of the community.”
