Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa Central, has called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure a sustained and thorough investigation into the killing of two private security men in Wa.
He emphasized that the investigations into the murder should not fade away as a ‘mere nine-day wonder.’
Wa residents are gripped with fear following the gruesome killing of two private security men in the town. The two private security men were killed at their duty posts in separate attacks at the Wa East office of the Ghana Education Service and the Wa Model Junior High School.
Citi FM’s Upper West regional correspondent, Latif Mahama, reported that the situation sent shivers down the spines of many residents, who are calling on the police to beef up security in the town.
During an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the importance of a police strategy that results in actionable findings from the investigations.
“I think that the police must begin to think through this situation that these are people who might not necessarily be living in Wa. And these are people whose beliefs you can easily guess the kind of people they are. It is saddening that the kind of investigation that was started about a year and a half ago suddenly got to an end. No report has been made, nobody has been caught, the few suspected have been released, and the tension is still on. The lives of people are at risk and the security forces appear not to have answers to it. This is very disturbing and terrible.”
“It shouldn’t just be the same kind of thing where the people are arrested and then nothing else is done, and the same people who are arrested are later found not to be the culprits or at least some interventions have come in and they are released, and everything goes back to normal again. There must be a professional approach to this investigation. The quality must be high. Somebody has to be seen, some evidence has to be shown. I know the Ghana Police can do it and it shouldn’t just be a nine-day wonder of somebody being arrested and then subsequently released. The investigation should continue for years if they can’t find the culprits now, and there must be some report to us that progress is being made,” he stated.
