Winneba Junction is facing a critical flooding crisis, exacerbated by ongoing construction activities.
The situation has escalated to the point where numerous homes are now submerged, prompting the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to issue a directive for residents to seek safer grounds.
Dr. Emmanuel Asaase, a resident, shared his concerns with Umaru Sanda Amadu during an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday.
“There is this road construction ongoing and that means they have to build bridges. Unfortunately, as they are building the bridge they decided to block some of the waterways…I had to go to NADMO. They came and assessed the situation but unfortunately, they couldn’t do much.
“So it started raining heavily this morning and I was called home. I went to the District Engineer’s office; he followed me to the site, just looked around and left.”
Dr. Asaase continued, detailing the community’s efforts to mitigate the situation: “I had to resort to going to the radio station…I went to the police and they asked me to go to the court… We were able to get in touch with the contractors who are Chinese.
“They brought excavators, and they started dredging but unfortunately what they did wasn’t good enough and looking at the water and looking at the sky now there is going to be a downpour. So we are pleading with the authorities that we shouldn’t wait till something happens.”
Emmanuel Tetteh, an official from NADMO, acknowledged the severity of the situation and reiterated the call for safety.
