Five hundred and three (503) brilliant but needy students from various departments of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have received laptops to facilitate and enhance their studies on campus.

The students, selected based on their needs and academic performance, were the fourth group to benefit from the university’s “Support One Needy Student with One Laptop” (SONSOL) initiative, which commenced in 2021.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, aims to support intelligent but less privileged students with one laptop each to ensure an easy and comfortable stay on campus as far as their studies are concerned.

The project is funded by support and donations from stakeholders and corporate organizations passionate about societal impact.

This year’s donations came from individuals and organizations, including the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Zenith Bank, OmniBSIC Bank Ghana Limited, UNIJAY Fashion, Isaac Books and Stationery, Asib Construction Ltd., Papnoble, SIC Ventures Gh. Ltd., Mrs. Bernice Asamoah, Andysarp, Multinec, Fapim Co. Ltd., Wolfenberg Safety and Power Tools, SRC-KNUST, Mount Sinai Enterprise, Distance Learning Students Association, Agyemang Company Limited, GRASAG-KNUST, and NUGS-KNUST.

In her speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Dickson, expressed appreciation to the sponsors of the scheme and called for more support from individuals and the general public, emphasising the University’s commitment to provide an all inclusive education where no one is left behind.

She reiterated that the number of students who apply each year outnumbers the laptops distributed, underscoring the need for more support.

“For the past four years we have received almost ten thousand (10,000) applications and we have been able with the help of our partners given out two thousand three hundred and two (2,302) laptops, valued at ¢23 million,” Prof. Rita mentioned.

Adding that, “We encourage corporate organizations and individuals to support our needy but brilliant students with more laptops. No contribution is too small. These students will appreciate it and bless you.”
