L.I on sirens, speed limit exemptions for ministers, MPs must not inconvenience Ghanaians – Twum-Barimah

Paul Apreku Twum-Barimah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa East, has expressed concerns about the new Legislative Instrument (L.I) on sirens and speed limit exemptions for ministers and MPs, emphasising that it should not cause inconvenience to Ghanaians.

The Transport Ministry has proposed a new L.I to modify certain sections of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012. This proposed amendment aims to extend privileges, previously exclusive to emergency and specialised vehicles, to MPs and state ministers.

Upon approval, the new L.I will allow the installation of sirens or bells as warning devices on specific categories of vehicles. This includes vehicles owned by MPs, state ministers, and Supreme Court justices, enabling them to use sirens or bells to navigate through traffic congestion.

In a conversation with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, Mr Twum-Barimah said he had a challenge with the speed limit exemptions the LI was seeking, questioning why it would be so because sirens would be used.

He stressed the need for proper management of the law to prevent road chaos.

“My challenge with this LI is the speed limit…Because if you are driving with a siren, clearly you should have a good way that you can go at a consistent speed. Driving with siren doesn’t mean you should go at speed, consistency that nothing blocks your way so that you can get whatever you want to get in time So if you have a siren why should you be given a speed limit.”

“…I think what we should look at is how are the police going to ensure these people applying this LI or this exemption in a way that it will not inconvenience the average Ghanaians. That must be also laid out.”

“…So clearly if it is not properly managed then the chaos that we are going to have on our roads are going to be mass…It must be properly coordinated…You must find a way to regulate it such that it will not inconvenience average Ghanaians who will also use the road,” Mr Twum-Barimah stated.
