The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has donated learning materials to basic schools impacted by the recent flooding in the South Tongu District in the Volta Region.
The flooding had been caused by the spillage of the Akosombo dam that, according to the Volta River Authority, rose beyond acceptable levels.
The resultant flooding affected several communities and rendered many homeless for days. Several benevolent organisations including Citi FM and Channel One TV went to the aid of the flood victims with support such as food, clothing, hospital and residential facilities.
The Ghana Bar Association turned its attention to the learners whose education was equally disrupted by the flood waters.
The Association under the leadership of Yaw Acheampong Boafo visited Mepe with 1000 exercise books, 4000 pens and 3,456 pencils and crayons among others to help the affected learners reinstate their academic lives.
Addressing the media after the donations, Mr Acheampong Boafo said “Knowing that learners from these affected communities will write the same BECE and Scramble for the same senior high schools as all others, we thought it is important to support them in any way possible.”
The District Director of Education, Mrs Isabella Ayimey was grateful to the GBA for the support and asked for more support.
She said the learners needed dual desks at the JHS and Primary levels and hexagonal tables at the kindergarten.
