President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made an urgent appeal for the feuding factions in Sudan to engage in immediate negotiations, to restore peace and stability in the region.
Sudan plunged into chaos in April, last year when a power struggle erupted between its military and a formidable paramilitary group. This ongoing conflict has resulted in the loss of over 15,000 lives.
The United Nations has labelled the situation as one of the world’s “most significant displacement crises,” with approximately nine million individuals being compelled to abandon their homes.
Warnings of potential genocide have been issued concerning Darfur, a western region of Sudan. The inhabitants claim they have been targeted by combatants based on their ethnic backgrounds.
On Sunday, during the 50th-anniversary celebration of BADEA and the inauguration of the Arab-Africa financial consortium in Accra, President Akufo-Addo joined the chorus of voices calling for peace in Sudan.
He also advocated for backing Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union’s High Representative for Silencing the Guns.
“I would like at the outset to add my voice to that of the chairperson of the AU Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat calling for negotiations between the warring parties and the restoration of peace to Sudan and for support for the work of the AU facilitator, the outstanding Ghanaian diplomat Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas,” he declared.
