Peter Lanchene Toobo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West, has expressed serious concerns about what he perceives as political interference in the recruitment processes of the country’s security services.
Drawing from his experience as a former senior police officer, he cautioned that political interference in security recruitments could pose a risk to Ghana’s security framework.
Media reports indicate that the government intends to bring on board about 11,000 new staff across different security agencies.
Mr Toobo has voiced criticism over the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s alleged undue influence in the selection and appointment of personnel for these positions, which he believes circumvents standard public recruitment procedures.
At a press conference in Wa on Tuesday, he levelled accusations against Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, alleging that he is working with NPP leaders to carry out covert recruitments without following transparent recruitment guidelines.
He stressed that such practices compromise the integrity of the security services and advocated for recruitment processes to be managed openly by the respective agencies, free from political interference.
“The minister is overstepping his role by micromanaging the security sector. Recruitment should be the responsibility of the services themselves, not political appointees. The public deserves transparency in how security personnel are selected,” he stated.
Mr Toobo called on stakeholders, including the media, to tackle this issue, highlighting worries about corruption and nepotism within the government.
He underscored the need for maintaining fair and accountable practices in the recruitment of security personnel to preserve public trust and safeguard national security.
