The Convener of the partnership between three social protection Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Dr Esther Offei Aboagye, is urging the government to uphold its commitment to ensuring the prompt disbursement of Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) funds.
The three social protection CSOs include the Civil Society Platform on Sustainable Development Goal 10, the Social Accountability Forum, and the Civil Society Platform for Social Protection.
The government, through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection announced a 100% increase of cash grants for beneficiary households under the LEAP programme effective Monday July 1, 2024.
While applauding the government’s efforts in increasing these funds, Dr Aboagye emphasised the need for further increases to address the recent economic challenges in the country, alongside ensuring timely fund distribution.
“The amount is not enough but given the circumstances and the physical crunch that the country is in, it is an indication of the good intention of the government. It delays a little and again the quantum is not enough.
“But what we would like to see is a situation where we are able to budget realistically for these families and be able to release it in time because when we receive the monies on time, we can plan better. We would also like to see a situation where we can augment the incomes of these leap beneficiaries in a more sustainable way,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Dr Aboagye affirmed the CSOs commitment to advocate for the rights of the LEAP beneficiaries.
She said, “We will continue to urge government, to advocate for the right thing to be done for the leap beneficiaries so that what we are committed to giving to them as their right will be given to them.”
