The Ghana Hydrological Authority (GHA) has warned against the indiscriminate disposal of waste, which clogs drains during downpours resulting in floods.
According to the authority, the government’s efforts to dredge, widen, and construct drains to curb flooding will be futile if citizens do not change their behaviours.
Parts of Accra often experience floods whenever there is a downpour, negatively impacting the lives of many.
Speaking to the media after signing a memorandum of understanding between the Ghana Hydrological Authority and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the Chief Executive Officer of the authority, Dr John Kissi, urged the public to support government efforts to curb flooding.
“Whereas the government is investing so much money in building new drains, expanding existing ones, dredging and desilting channels and all of that if we still continue to put rubbish and solid waste in our drains, we will continue to have flooding.
“If people are encroaching on drainage buffers, we will still have flooding. So we need people to complement the efforts of the government to help alleviate or mitigate the flooding challenge that we have. Behavioural change is essential.”
