The government has successfully connected 193 health facilities, including 49 polyclinics to its new e-health system in a major boost for the country’s healthcare sector.

This digital transformation aims to revolutionise healthcare delivery across the country.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam announced this when he presented the 2024 mid-year budget review in Parliament on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

“Mr Speaker, as part of government’s digitisation agenda, the e-health project is progressing steadily with concentration on health centres and polyclinics, this year. As of June 2024, a total of 49 polyclinics and 144 health centres have been connected, enhancing access to patient data at the point of care, claims management, and real-time bio-surveillance data. This has significantly strengthened the country’s health delivery system,” the Minister said.

He highlighted the government’s dedication to using technology to improve healthcare for all. This e-health system promises increased efficiency, better access, and a more patient-centered approach.

Dr Adam highlighted the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery across the nation.

“Our government is dedicated to improving healthcare access and quality for all Ghanaians. By integrating e-health systems into our polyclinics and health centres, we are revolutionising the way healthcare is delivered, making it more efficient, accessible, and patient-centered,” he stated.

The e-health initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that medical services are more efficient and responsive to the needs of the population. This system allows for better management of patient records, real-time monitoring of health data, and improved coordination of care among healthcare providers.

Dr Adam explained that the e-health system would significantly enhance the capacity of health facilities to provide timely and accurate diagnoses and treatments.

“With the e-health system, healthcare providers can access patient records instantly, leading to quicker and more accurate diagnoses. This system also facilitates better coordination between different levels of care, ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment at the right time,” he said.

The integration of e-health systems is expected to reduce the administrative burden on healthcare workers, allowing them to focus more on patient care. By automating routine tasks and streamlining workflows, the e-health system aims to improve the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery.

In addition to improving clinical outcomes, the e-health system is also designed to enhance health data management and reporting. This will enable the Ministry of Health to monitor health trends more effectively, plan resources better, and respond to public health emergencies with greater agility.
