The Ministry of Roads and Highways has asked the Board of the Road Management Fund to ensure that 60 per cent of proceeds from the fund are channeled into maintenance works.
The Ministry bemoans that inadequate budgetary allocations over the years have hampered maintenance financing and its ability to develop more roads.
Speaking at the induction of the newly appointed Board Chairman of the Road Management Fund, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye says the government is set to embark on an enhanced road maintenance programme in the coming days.
“Because over the years, the budgetary allocation has not been enough to develop more roads, the maintenance financing has suffered. But we believe that we cannot just continue to develop our roads without maintaining them. As a result, I’m charging the members of the board that there’s a new policy shift to focus equally on maintenance.
“Therefore about 60% of proceeds from road funds should go into road maintenance so that we can protect what we have already done, while we look at other alternatives financing for more developments,” the Minister for Roads and Highways said.
