Minority to stage another #OccupyBoGProtest on July 30

The Minority caucus in Parliament has hinted at plans to stage a second protest to demand the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison and his two deputies from office.

Citi News sources within the caucus say it is imperative the governor who supervised “a great mess at the Central Bank is replaced with a more competent person.”

Members of the caucus staged a protest on October 3, 2023, to demand the resignation of BoG’s governor and deputies after the Bank recorded a GH¢60.81 billion loss in the 2022 fiscal year and further allocated over $250 million for the construction of a new headquarters.

Protesters converged at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and proceeded to Adabraka – Ridge Roundabout – National Theatre Traffic Light -High Court Complex Traffic Light – Attah Mills Highway and made a U-Turn at the National Lottery Authority and terminated at the Independence Square where leadership went to present a petition to the governor who refused to meet them in person but sent his head of security instead.

The protest was not successful and processes commenced right away to schedule a new date that lingered for close to a year.

Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga however filed a Right to Information Act (RTI) request demanding information on the combined losses of approximately GHS 70 billion reported in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023.

He also sought information on the over GH¢250 million expended on the BoG’s new head office and a clinic that is also under construction.

Citi News sources indicate that the Bawku Central lawmaker will lead the protest after obtaining the necessary authorisation and clearance from the police.
