Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has assured that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will take into serious consideration the findings of the Afrobarometer report.
The Afrobarometer’s key report on Democratic Trends in Africa reveals a majority of the youth expressing dissatisfaction with democratic governance in their respective countries.
The survey, which covered 39 African countries, shows an increasing trend of disillusionment with democracy among the youth. This group is gradually favouring military rule as a temporary fix to the shortcomings of civilian leaders.
This shift can be attributed to several factors, including unemployment, corruption, and a lack of accountability.
The report further highlights that the voices of African youth are not adequately represented in the policy-making process. It also points out that African youth lag behind older generations by 7 to 12 percentage points in other forms of political engagement.
The report again states that an alarming 67% of Africans feel their governments are failing in the fight against corruption. Moreover, a significant 71% of Africans who report corruption to the authorities face the risk of retaliation.
During his appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, Dr Kissi emphasised that the government is committed to addressing these pressing issues.
“It will not be taken for granted…The ruling party will not take for granted the Afrobarometer results. We will pay attention. We will work with it. We will see how best we can address some of the pressing issue,” he stated.
