The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Okaikwei North, Boye Laryea, has attributed recent fire incidents in the municipality to newly installed ECG meters.
This comes as some structures in Abeka were destroyed by fire during the early hours of Monday, July 1, 2024.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been on a drive to replace some meters as part of efforts to reduce losses.
However, some customers have opposed the installation of these new meters with the most recent person being the Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North, Boye Laryea.
He blames the recent fire incidents in his area on the new meters, during a tour of the affected areas and implored ECG to reconsider the quality of meters being installed within the municipality.
He said, ” I have no doubts or whatsoever that it could be the meters that the ECG is fixing recently. Because it happened to my office three times. They came, we had no problem with the meter, they came and started changing the meter and within one week, our house was nearly on fire.”
“I want to plead with them that they should stop the changing of the meter for now, for them to investigate the meter they are fixing now. I’m also calling on the fire service to come and give us full reports on what they saw and what they know about what is actually happening.
The Okaikwei North MCE also hinted at a petition to the ECG, saying ” We are going to write to them, a petition so they know what is happening. My issue is that they should come and at least help those who are affected by this unfortunate incident, so they do not go into poverty.”
