The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is demanding the removal of the board members of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Pensions Regulatory Commission (NPRA).
He is also calling for the dismissal of the SSNIT Director-General Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo and the NPRA Chief Executive Officer John Kwaning Mbroh from their positions.
In a Facebook post on July 12, Ablakwa said, “In addition, we demand that the entire SSNIT board, the NPRA board, the SSNIT Director-General and the NPRA Chief Executive Officer must all be sacked without further delay.”
Background
SSNIT entered into negotiations with Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, to sell 60% of its shares in some four hotels.
Led by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, civil society groups protested against the hotel sale on June 18.
On June 28, the National Pensions Regulatory Commission directed SSNIT to suspend its negotiations with Rock City over the proposed sale of the four hotels, pending further evaluation and engagement.
However, the NPRA subsequently gave the green light for the sale of SSNIT shares in four hotels, prompting Organised Labour’s swift response.
On Thursday, July 11, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, assured Parliament that all necessary procedures had been followed.
The deal sparked criticism, with Organised Labour highlighting its implications for pensioners.
Following an emergency National Executive Council meeting, Organised Labour declared its intention to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, July 15. Seven government agencies committed to participating in the strike.
Rock City subsequently declared its intention not to purchase the four hotels. SSNIT later announced the termination of the sale of its 60% shares in the hotels.
