Transport unions have ruled out an imminent increase in transport fares over the recent fuel price hikes, despite a push by some drivers for upward adjustments.
This is because the unions say the fuel price hikes did not meet the threshold to warrant an increase in transport fares.
That was the decision taken at the congress of transport unions at Gomoa Fetteh over the weekend.
Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado, in an interview with Citi Business News said that the transport unions have turned their focus to formulating a policy document that will serve as the basis for clear-cut guidelines in the revision of transport fares, either quarterly or semi-annually.
“It will be a policy or a blueprint that we will be following henceforth because sitting with minister up and down is a little bit disturbing so we have to come out with a blueprint that every passenger…every Ghanaian will know that it will take us some months or some days before transport fares will be increased.”
“It is not all the time that we will be depending on an increase in fuel prices for us to increase transport fares. If we come up with a good policy and a roadmap that everybody will understand that in Ghana, we will increase transport fares either quarterly or half a year, then everybody knows that at least for one to six months, there will be increments. As it stands now, people are asking whether drivers are going to increase transport fare again. For now, let me assure Ghanaians that we, the drivers, are not going to increase transport fares,” he stated.
