President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in recognition of his contributions to the institution’s growth and development.

This comes after the Volta Regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed strong opposition.

The prestigious award was presented at a special congregation ceremony held during the commissioning of the university’s $60 million second-phase campus development project in Ho.

The project, facilitated by the President, aims to expand the university’s capacity and enhance its health-focused programmes.

Justice Victor Jones Mawulorm Dotse, Chairman of the University Governing Council, praised the President’s commitment to the university, citing his multiple visits and unwavering support.

The Chairman acknowledged the President’s instrumental role in securing funding for the project in China and expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including past university leaders, traditional rulers, and the people of Ho, for their collective efforts.

“UHAS is determined to be a star in health education and your constant interest in us gives us the zeal to pursue this great vision,” he said.

A citation honouring President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, read by Mrs. Yaa Opuni Amankwa, Registrar of the University, highlighted his remarkable achievements and international recognition as a distinguished statesman.

The citation praised his lifelong commitment to promoting democracy and his outstanding contributions to education development.

Particularly noteworthy was his pioneering initiative, the 2017 Free Senior High School Policy, which was hailed as an unprecedented achievement. This groundbreaking policy abolished secondary school fees, providing access to education for millions of young people and transforming the educational landscape in Ghana.

“Today, the University of Health and Allied Sciences is set to confer on you the Honorary Doctor of Science for your exemplary leadership in making science education more accessible to Ghanaian families,” she remarked.

The university highlighted the significant impact of the campus expansion, which will enable the university to admit over 2,000 additional students, further solidifying its position as a leader in health education.
