Western North residents lament deplorable road network

There has been an outcry by chiefs and people in communities in the Western North over deplorable road networks following a visit by the Roads and Highways Minister to the area.

Inhabitants are calling on the government to fulfil its promise of fixing deplorable roads in the region after a similar pledge made by President Akufo-Addo in 2017 is yet to be fulfilled.

The onset of the rains has worsened the plight of road users and other motorists in major communities of the Western North Region.

Commercial drivers lament being the hardest hit as they continue to spend on maintenance due to the damage the bad roads cause to their vehicles.

The Western North was created out of the Western Region by the Akufo-Addo-led Government with the aim of decentralising development.

While the Government continues to make strides in tackling major developmental issues in the region, the roads remain the biggest concern for inhabitants.

Communities like Boazan, Juaboso, Bodi and Bibiani have to deal with poor roads in their everyday lives.

The inhabitants in the region said their joy of seeing a delegation from the Roads and Highways Ministry led by the sector minister can only be completed if the roads are worked on.

“Our road is terrible, we’re really suffering, we’re unable to ply the road when it rains. We have hopes in the minister to ensure that the roads are fixed,” resident, James Baidoo said.

“The road is so bad, previously we used to spend 15 minutes, but now spend an hour and a half on the road to reach our destination, we’re pleading with authorities to come to our aid,” a frustrated driver said.

Roads and Highways Minister, Francis Asenso Boakye inspected roads in the area and admitted there is more work to do in the area.

“We also inspected some road works in Juaboso town roads, these are areas that in the past haven’t experienced major road works, but as a result of the interventions by Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, we have seen some major road works going on there.

“Another road that is worthy of note is the Benkyima junction to Juaboso, which I even had the opportunity to answer questions on it in parliament sometime last week. The ministry had made plans to repair the damaged sections of the road.

“And very soon a contractor will come to the site. I have had the opportunity to visit some of the roads. And we’re convinced that we even have to do more.”

The Chiefs of the area say they will continue to appeal to authorities to fix the road situation in the region.
