The National Homeownership Fund (NHF) is making significant progress in its mission to provide affordable housing to Ghanaians, with 129 new housing units currently 55% complete since construction began in April 2024.

This rapid development, achieved through a collaborative effort between the NHF, the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), and the Ministry of Works and Housing, was praised by the sector minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during his visit to the construction site on Friday, August 23, 2024.

The ongoing Phase 3 of the NHF project has been characterised by speed and efficiency, earning commendations from the Minister, who was visibly pleased with the progress made.

“When I visited in early April, you were just starting. Now, to see some of these units nearing the roofing stage is very impressive. The speed at which you’ve worked is commendable, and it’s clear that you haven’t sacrificed quality. Instead, you’ve implemented more efficient methods to deliver these units,” he stated.

The NHF, a key component of the government’s broader strategy to tackle the housing deficit, is designed to provide affordable housing options for Ghanaians. This initiative targets both public and private sector workers, ensuring that more citizens can access quality housing through affordable mortgage rates.

According to the Minister, the collaboration between the NHF, TDC, and the Ministry of Works and Housing has been pivotal in driving the success of the project.

He emphasised that such synergies were crucial in overcoming the housing challenges facing the country.

“This partnership has been instrumental in demonstrating what can be achieved when different stakeholders come together with a common purpose. The speed and quality of this project are a testament to what can be done when we work together efficiently,” Nkrumah stated.

The Minister also emphasised the broader implications of this project for the country’s housing agenda. With Ghana facing a significant housing deficit, the government’s strategy has been to prioritise affordable housing initiatives that cater to both public and private sector workers. The NHF, as part of this strategy, he said has been designed to provide affordable homeownership opportunities, thereby improving living conditions and promoting economic stability for Ghanaians.

This, Nkrumah concluded his visit by challenging the NHF to replicate the successes of the Phase 3 project in other ongoing and future housing initiatives.

He highlighted the district housing projects as the next frontier for the NHF’s proven model of efficient and quality construction.

“As we move forward, I charge you to take the lessons learned here and apply them to our district housing projects. The speed and quality you’ve demonstrated must now be the standard for all our housing projects across the country.”

“Our goal is to ensure that every Ghanaian has access to a decent and affordable home, and we are well on our way to achieving that,” he urged.
