Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Theresa Lardi Awuni, has strongly voiced her dissatisfaction with how a demolition exercise was carried out on lands opposite the Achimota Police Station.
About five structures suffered partial and total demolition in the early hours of Sunday, August 4, when a bulldozer made its way to the area.
While staff of the University of Ghana and other occupants of land have vowed to resist eviction, the MP for Okaikwei North, called on the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly to ensure a more equitable solution to address the concerns of those who have been displaced.
“If you’re coming to ward off the Assembly complex, I don’t think this is the way to go about it. What stops the Assembly or the hooligans who came around from telling the people to vacate? If you have any rights to the place, You have to come and beg.
“If the Achimota School had demolished buildings, I don’t think there would be land for assembly to get a space to put up an office complex. We’re hearing that the place has been given to one estate developer, and another person is also saying that a portion of the place is going to be used for a Mall, so, you have to render hard-working, selfless, peaceful Ghanaians homeless to satisfy your greed? Is that what it is? Theresa Lardi Awuni asked.
