A severe drought in the Ashanti Region is taking a devastating toll on farmers, who warn of an imminent food shortage if urgent interventions are not implemented.
Farmers in the Ejura Sekyedumase area have reported significant losses, despite substantial investments in their farms.
Seidu Mohammed, a local farmer, shared his struggles with Channel One News. He planted maize on 10 acres of land, expecting a yield of at least 100 bags.
However, the drought resulted in a harvest of just 25 bags.
Many other farmers in the area face similar challenges as the drought has forced farmers to increase the price of a bag of maize, contrary to expectations of lower prices during this time.
Maria Abubakar, a corn flour producer, corroborated this, highlighting the severe impact on their businesses.
A kenkey seller also expressed concerns about the situation’s effect on their livelihood.
Farmers are urging the government to find an urgent solution to address this issue and prevent similar situations in the future.
