Farmers in communities along the Bayere Nkwanta-Amenamu stretch in the Ejura-Sekyedumase municipality of the Ashanti Region are lamenting significant post-harvest losses due to the poor state of the road.
The road, which connects major farming areas, has been in disrepair for years, making it difficult for farmers to transport their produce to markets.
The situation has been exacerbated by the recent drought that has affected the northern part of Ghana, leading to food insecurity concerns.
Despite the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s efforts to address the issue by banning grain exports, the deplorable road conditions continue to hinder farmers’ efforts to sell their produce.
Inhabitants of Amenamu have repeatedly highlighted the challenges posed by the unmotorable road, including risking lives during emergencies and reported miscarriages.
Petitions have been sent to relevant authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive, but the road remains neglected.
The latest petition, submitted on August 19, 2024, urges the government to address the situation urgently.
Farmers and inhabitants are stressing their call for the government to ensure the construction of the road to mitigate post-harvest losses and improve their livelihoods
