In a bid to resolve the long-standing dispute over salt mining concessions in the Ada Songor Lagoon, Electrochem Ghana Limited has established an outgrower scheme to partner with local miners.
This move follows a recommendation by a joint parliamentary committee to cede portions of the company’s 41,000-acre concession to the residents.
The Ada community has resisted Electrochem’s operations for years, accusing the company of depriving them of their livelihoods.
The situation escalated in November 2023, resulting in a fatal shooting during a violent confrontation between company staff and residents.
Despite Parliament’s rejection of the joint committee’s report, Electrochem has taken proactive steps to address the community’s concerns.
The company has earmarked 1,000 acres for the outgrower scheme and invited other groups to join.
Abdul Razak Adam, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company disclosed that seven local associations have already been allocated land, emphasising the company’s commitment to transparency and collaboration.
According to him, an additional 1,000 acres have been earmarked for the community plan system, demonstrating Electrochem’s dedication to finding a sustainable solution that benefits both the company and the Ada community.
“So, the seven associations that I have mentioned, we have already earmarked lands for them. We are not just talking about it, but we’ve actually done it and I have the side plans here with me to ensure that they can look at it and take ownership from me from today and go forward. I so encourage more companies, more businesses, please come forward. We are willing to work with you and ensure that these lands are made available to you.”
“1000 acres have been earmarked for short-term, medium-term and long-term for the outgrower scheme. In our community plan system, another 1000 acres have been earmarked for the community plan system,” he stated.
