The Ghana Mine Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress has called on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, to assist in expediting legal proceedings in their case against Sunon Asogli.
The union is seeking the reinstatement of three unionised workers dismissed by the company in 2023 after they decided to join TUC, an action the union insists violates the workers’ rights.
General Secretary of the Mine Workers’, Abdul Moomin Gbana, expressed frustration over the delay in the case and called for the Chief Justice’s intervention to ensure that justice is served.
“You know how protracted sometimes cases in court can be. But you and I know that the matter involving our three union leaders at Sunan Asogli was a matter that took the national stage and indeed, it attracted a lot of national attention.
“Now, the matter found its way into court and since then, Sunan Asogli and their lawyers have been playing legal gymnastics in court with us.
“So we envisage a protraction of this case and that is why we believe that once it is within the ambit of the courts, the Chief Justice needs to at least intervene and we believe her intervention will bring to bear an expeditious trial of the matter. So all we are requesting is an expeditious trial of the matter.”
