The Ghana National Gas Company says it has already completed 60 percent of its ongoing routine maintenance works which is critical to ensuring efficient and sustainable gas processing for Ghana’s Thermal power generation.
The Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana Gas, Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu speaking to Channel One News during an inspection of the ongoing maintenance works at Atuabo said its engineers hope to finish the work which started on 1st August ahead of the scheduled 17-day maintenance work.
“there’s a serious maintenance going on at the moment and that is to make sure that the efficiency of the plant and then good service of the plant is maintained and that’s exactly what is happening here. So far, the engineers are working on the heater system. You can see that they are working on other areas of the processing plant to make sure that everything is on point.”
“In the meantime, we are looking at the timelines as well. We are working ahead of schedule and we’re definitely going to finish before the timelines that we gave. I can say that we’re doing almost about 60 per cent completion now because we are far ahead of schedule per advice from the engineers. It means that we are going to finish maybe a day before time, 16th August, but they need to run it to see whether everything is on point. They will do what we call pushing nitrogen into the gas pipelines to see whether everything is okay before the plant comes back to normal,” he explained.
Richard Alamu, who is the Asset Integrity and Maintenance Manager of Ghana Gas on his part gave a justification for the shutdown.
“We do regular maintenance on all equipment. There is some equipment that you need to do maintenance on, but you need to shut down the plant. So you assemble all of them and schedule maintenance for them. We then seek approval from the Energy Ministry to shut down to address all these maintenance challenges.”
“Before any work will be done as well, there is an assessment from all Departments as well as other departments from external companies or stakeholders. We look at the cost component of it, and the risk assessment of it. We look at the jobs that we might have to consider deferring and we look at the consequences of deferring some of the jobs that might not need to be deferred. We address all these during a shutdown maintenance and that’s what we’ve done for this 2024 shutdown maintenance.“, he noted.
