Miners carrying out their activities in the middle of the Konongo township on the Kumasi-Accra highway have ceased operations following a security intervention.
This follows concerns raised by residents of Konongo who expressed discontent about the surge in mining activities in the area, which continues to destroy the environment and water bodies.
Municipal Chief Executive for Asante Akyem Central, Robert Yaw Kwakye, though will not speak on record, confirmed the security agencies have taken up the issue and have stopped the miners from continuing with their activities.
He said the Assembly is currently taking steps to reclaim the land which has been destroyed due to the mining activities.
The activities are polluting the Owere River, a major water source which serves communities within Konongo and other areas.
According to officers of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Minerals Commission, they were only told about dredging exercise being carried out by the Asante Akim Central Assembly and are not aware of mining activities.
