Traffic lights at major intersections within the Kumasi metropolis in the Ashanti Region remain non-functional, prompting concerns among motorists who fear for their safety.
Motorists have bemoaned the lack of effort by the authorities to repair the faulty traffic lights, intensifying their calls for the facilities to be fixed.
Despite continuous repairs and replacements, some traffic lights have frequently broken down.
At various lorry terminals, malfunctioning traffic lights on the streets of the Kumasi metropolis remain a concern for drivers.
The traffic lights situated at major intersections have consistently broken down, though some were recently replaced.
Some pedestrians share the dangers they face using the road, especially in areas where traffic lights have not worked for years.
Traffic lights automatically shut off during power outages, and some are destroyed due to power fluctuations.
A concerned driver, Kwabena Amevor, said, “The traffic lights around Kumasi Children’s Park have broken down for two years now. They came to fix it, but it is faulty again. Accidents occur on that stretch due to the malfunctioning traffic lights. The opposite side works, but drivers who use the stretch from Anloga junction to town have difficulties because the lights are not working.”
Another driver Owusu Memsah Simon, also stated, “The Afful Nkwanta and Stadium intersections have had faulty traffic lights for some time now and the city authorities use these intersections without doing anything about the situation. This continues to cause accidents on those stretches.”
“Faulty traffic lights at major intersections in the city are a worry to drivers. Some have been faulty for over five years and drivers always have to be extra careful to avoid accidents,” Kwame Amponsah, a driver said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Physics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has advocated for Ghana to use solar panels to power traffic lights across the country.
Students from the department, with the aid of their lecturers, installed traffic lights on the KNUST campus. The department ensures regular maintenance of these traffic lights to ensure they serve their intended purposes.
