Northern Region: Provide details on officials responsible for unauthorised transfer of votes -NDC to EC

The Northern Regional executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide information on the officials responsible for the unauthorised transfer of votes belonging to party members in the region to the Upper East Region.

According to the Northern Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mohammed Abdul Salam, 32 members from the Sagnarigu and Tamale South constituencies had their votes unlawfully transferred to the Binduri Constituency.

This was allegedly done after the members were misled into providing their voter ID cards under the pretext of a job opportunity by one Mohammed Lukman.

The alleged perpetrator has since been arrested by the police, and an investigation is currently underway. The victims discovered the unauthorised transfer when their names were missing during the ongoing voter exhibition exercise conducted by the EC.

Salam shared this information during a press briefing at the NDC’s regional office in Tamale.

“We have in our possession a total number of 32 voter ID cards and all these people we have verified have been transferred to the Pusiga constituency. Yet none of these people appeared even in the Upper East, not to talk of the Pusiga constituency to demand the transfer of their votes. We have reported to the EC regional director for the last two days, and we told him we are looking for the man to get the police to investigate.

“The EC transfer is not done by individuals, it’s not an App where you can do it on your own. It is done procedurally, one must appear at their district office. Who in the EC’s employees’ list executed the transfers? How did the person do it, did he/she do it in accordance with the EC’s regulations for transfer of votes? If that was not done, the EC must fish out that person. We want the EC to fish out the information and make it known to the Ghanaian public.”

Efforts to reach the police and the regional EC to comment on the incident proved futile.
