The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has expressed concern over the increasing number of widows resulting from road crashes involving men.
According to recent NRSA data, men accounted for approximately 79% of road fatalities between January and July 2024, while women accounted for 21%.
Speaking at the launch of the Road Safety Code of Practice for political activities in Accra, Daniel Wuaku, Director for Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the NRSA, urged women to become road safety advocates.
He emphasised that women are disproportionately affected by road fatalities, as they are often left to cope with the loss of their loved ones.
Wuaku stated, “Women constitute just 21% of deaths recorded between January to July 2024. Men constitute 79%. I see that we are producing more widows.
“I think it is time for women to take an advocacy position in this country and fight for lives because they are the ones at the receiving end. And therefore we need you on board to support our activities”.
