Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced that Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities in the Central Region will experience water challenges due to illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.
GWL, in a statement on Friday, August 30 explained that the catchment area’s pollution has reduced water intake to a minimal level, with approximately 60% of the catchment capacity silted due to galamsey.
The Company explained that the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has experienced a significant demand-supply gap due to inadequate raw water intake, caused by pollution of the Pra River.
This has resulted in high turbidity levels, making treatment challenging.
Currently, the plant operates at a quarter of its installed capacity, producing only 7,500m³/day.
GWL apologised for the inconvenience and is engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution.
They have called on residents to report illegal mining activities and support initiatives protecting water bodies and promoting sustainable water use practices.
GWL emphasised the importance of community assistance in restoring raw water quality and ensuring a reliable supply of clean drinking water, especially during festive periods.
