The Assembly Member for the Senya Electoral Area in the Ayawaso North municipality in the Greater Accra Region, Wisdom Boateng, is urging the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover to reactivate the Operation Clean Your Frontage taskforce to enforce sanitation by-laws within the area.
The Assembly Member has expressed concerns that residents in Maamobi, Nima and neighbouring communities are accumulating waste in their homes, worsening the area’s sanitary conditions.
In an interaction with journalists following a clean-up exercise for the Homowo festival, he emphasised the importance of legally addressing individuals who maintain unclean surroundings.
“If there’s a task force to summon you to a court, you will make sure that you don’t litter around your houses. If the government can bring the task force back, it will help. operation ‘Clean Your Frontage’ is not active now, I have to tell you the truth. So, if the new Minister of Greater Accra can enforce the law so that we the assembly members can back it, I will be grateful for that initiative,” he stated.
Adding “If you see the rubbish within some houses, you wonder but sometimes I blame the individuals and institutions. The trucks that have to convey the waste containers don’t do it on time. The community people end up piling up the waste in their houses when they don’t have access to the containers. I’m calling on the local government to ensure that the lifter of the container is always active. You won’t see this mess in East Legon or Cantonments.”
The Chief Director of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, Lilian Baiker urged the various Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the capital to ensure sustainability of the Homowo clean-up exercise for a clean society.
“It’s getting bad, that is the work of the assemblies, they are supposed to make sure they maintain the cleanliness. So, I’m surprised to hear that it is getting worse again. Maybe we have to find out what is happening at the various assemblies and measures they have put in place to make sure that they sustain the place after we’re done with the cleaning. MCEs I’m pleading with you when we clean the places with Zoomlion and yourself, we expect everyone to sustain the cleanliness of the place.
“We don’t want to come back and see filth again. I’m hearing that some places have started getting bad. So, take measures, especially the markets, the Makola market. So, please AMA, Mayor and Korle Klottey Chief Executive kindly take steps to clean the places,” she stated.
