Hundreds of residents in Wa besieged the regional police headquarters on Monday, August 19, to express their frustration over delays in prosecuting two suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Jontong Naa Mutala Mahama, a chief in the town.
The residents had gathered at the Wa district court to witness proceedings but were left waiting for hours, only to be told that the case would not be called.
This sparked anger and led to a confrontation with the police, resulting in one person being arrested.
The situation was eventually brought under control, and the case was later called at the district court, where the two accused persons were remanded into prison custody to reappear on an undisclosed date for security reasons.
The murder of Jontong Naa Mutala Mahama on April 11, 2024, led to the arrest of one suspect, who was later released on bail.
Further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect on August 17, 2024, who identified the first suspect as his accomplice during an identification parade.
The principal state attorney, Saed Abdul-Shakur urged the residents to be patient and trust the police in their investigations into the killings that have caused havoc in the Wa municipality.
