The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has instructed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to temporarily distribute water using tankers to communities in parts of Accra that are experiencing water shortages.
This directive follows assurances from the company to the minister that a burst pipe in Dodowa, which caused the disruption, is being repaired and will be operational within 24 hours.
In response, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, visited the site to assess the damage and determine how quickly the issue could be resolved.
Speaking to the media, she assured the public that significant progress has been made and that water supply to the affected homes should resume within 24 hours.
She also directed the Ghana Water Limited to begin the temporary distribution of water to households.
The minister further expressed concern over the Ghana Water Company Limited’s failure to promptly inform the affected communities about the burst pipe, which led to the water shortage.
She said, “They have assured me that by the close of the day, the situation would be resolved. The pump that is causing the problem has been replaced so by close of the day, they’ll finish and then tomorrow morning, water that is life that we need will start flowing from the pipes of the affected areas.”
“We must respect our consumers, at least give them information when there are incidents such as this. They must be the first to know. We don’t just leave them without informing them, if we do that we are disrespecting them.”
