The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has welcomed a promise by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to provide free tertiary education for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Mr Mahama, during the NDC’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, on Saturday, August 24, said that when elected to office, his government will provide free tertiary education for all PWDs.
This, according to Mr Mahama, will ensure that PWDs had equitable and equal access to education without any barriers or difficulties.
Speaking to Citi News, Disability Inclusion and Governance Advisor at the GFD, Adam-Abdul Wahab, said that as a group, they will hold Mr Mahama accountable when he is elected in the coming December polls to ensure he implements the promise.
“That promise is a good point for persons with disabilities because tertiary education is very important and very relevant to everyone…However, I believe that the promise made by former president Mahama should be implemented effectively.
“It shouldn’t just be like a campaign promise. It should be something that would actualise, so that persons with disabilities benefit from that and as organisations of persons with disabilities, we will monitor this promise. If former President Mahama comes back as president, definitely as a group, we will have to hold him accountable to that particular promise,” he stated.
