The Wiki Green Conference, recognized as one of Ghana’s foremost platforms juxtaposing environmental discourse with the Open Movement, provides a unique opportunity to assess the impacts of climate change while discussing how collective action, knowledge sharing, and awareness can lead to more sustainable practices.
Hosted at the CSIR-Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (STEPRI) in Accra, the 2024 edition highlighted the role of “green citizenship”—empowering informed and involved youth people to contribute to environmental protection and climate action.
One of the conference’s key components has been its focus on Wikimedia projects and how it can be used to improve environmental education at the local community level. Speakers discussed how these open platforms can be harnessed to amplify the voices of environmental advocates, spread climate awareness, and generate crowd-sourced solutions to environmental issues.
Mr. Stephen Dakyi, a Wikipedian and a co-founder of the Wiki Green Initiative, stated in his opening speech that he believed the conference would bring equality to the accessibility of climate information. He went on to say that even though English is not spoken in the majority of the communities impacted by climate change in Ghana, discussions and literature on the subject are almost entirely in English.
“The Wiki Green Conference, therefore, seeks not only to bridge this gap but also to train young people on how to use the resource,” he said.
The conference featured various sessions such as panel discussions on topics such as the intersection of digital technology and environmental sustainability, and grassroots initiatives for green development. The Wiki Green Team shared case studies from community engagements they undertook in Praso in the Eastern Region and Adabraka in the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Otuo-Akyampong Boakye, a Co-founder of the Wiki Green Initiative explained that the time for young people to leverage the Open Movement for there is capacity development now. He added that in the advent of AI young people should get creative in using AI to address some of the environmental and climate challenges Ghana faces.
Attendees were charged by these interactive sessions and expressed optimism that the discussions at Wiki-Green 2024 would serve as a catalyst for meaningful change, particularly by involving citizens at every level. By fostering collaboration between researchers, activists, and the public, the conference aimed to build momentum towards a greener future for Ghana.
As the event concluded, it was clear that Wiki-Green 2024 had not only raised awareness but also inspired action. The call for a collective commitment to sustainable practices and the active participation of citizens in environmental governance echoed as a crucial step towards securing the future of the nation in the face of climate change.
